You will need 2 skeins of Dk or Worsted in 2 different contrasting colors.
The pattern is for Dk or worsted yarn weight but is easily adjusted for sock or sport weights.
The pattern uses circular needles and simple stitches allowing the yarn color to do all the work and can be accomplished by a newer knitter.
